Sculptural pieces and works on paper by Belinda Durrant examining the trappings of femininity, and desirability.
A new exhibition at The O3 Gallery presents an intriguing collection of sculptural pieces and works on paper by Belinda Durrant. These works examine the trappings of femininity and question the conceived relationship between body shape and desirability.
Durrant’s current line of inquiry has led her to study the constrictive qualities of corsetry, and the part it has played in the historical variation of the ‘ideal’ female shape. The corset has not only changed the size of the waist, but also moved it up and down to meet fashion’s demands. “It has enhanced, minimised, uplifted and flattened the breasts, curved the spine and weakened the muscles for centuries”.
Durrant’s work examines themes of constraint and restriction, as well as temptation and desire. Bird Cage Corset demonstrates skilled manipulation of fabric alongside delicate detailed drawing, and serves as a symbol of the entrapment of a natural form.
Having been a research scientist in a previous existence, observation and attention to detail remain intrinsic to Durrant’s work. She has always been a ‘maker’ and newly discovered printmaking techniques have been augmented with 3D work and installation in an attempt to depict the variety of roles that Durrant fulfils; as a woman, a daughter, a wife, and a mother. The use of objects, both found and created, as metaphor in the expression of emotions and memories is also prevalent in her work.
